Ask for a Referral
You’ll need a referral from your primary care provider to see a hematologist at NKCH.
Your blood can tell us a lot about your overall health. That’s why some doctors, called hematologists, specialize in studying the blood and blood diseases. Discover how the hematologists at North Kansas City Hospital play a strong role in the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses, cancers and chronic conditions.
What is Hematology?
Hematology is a medical field that’s focused on blood and blood diseases, including:
- Anemia
- Blood cancers
- Blood clots
- Blood-related infectious diseases, such as HIV and hepatitis C
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Hemophilia and other bleeding disorders
- Iron deficiency
- Sickle cell disease
Hematology Oncology
Hematology oncology merges two fields of medicine — hematology (blood and blood disorders) and oncology (cancer). Blood cancers require a different level of treatment because they often form in your blood cells instead of as a tumor.
At NKCH, our hematologists work closely with oncologists and other specialists to diagnose and treat many conditions, including blood cancers. That means you have access to specialized cancer care for diseases, such as:
- Leukemia (cancer of the blood)
- Lymphoma (cancer in the lymph system)
- Myeloma (cancer in plasma cells)
Treatment & Diagnosis for Blood Diseases
Team up with expert hematologists at NKCH. Our hematologists are medical doctors with additional training in diagnosing and treating blood diseases and related disorders.
A big part of hematology is blood tests that help us take a closer look at blood and platelet counts. With hematology and laboratory services onsite at NKCH, diagnosis happens more quickly. Your hematologist consults directly with your doctor, reviews your lab results and determines the most effective treatment and follow-up care
