At risk for a tumble?

As we age, our balance naturally declines, leaving us vulnerable falling which can lead to other more serious injuries. Thankfully, there is a multitude of things we can do to reduce the risk of fall for ourselves and loved ones. See below for at home fall prevention tips, as well as resources offered from NKC Health. Schedule a physical therapy appointment, no referral necessary, for a fall risk assessment and to get personalized treatment to help improve your balance, or look into attending one of our many fitness classes and events.

Fall prevention tips

  • Strengthen legs daily — sit‑to‑stands, heel raises, short walks.
  • Practice balance — heel to toe stance holding onto a counter.
  • Use safe footwear — supportive, non‑slip shoes (no slippers or socks).
  • Clear pathways — remove clutter, cords, and loose rugs.
  • Improve lighting — add night lights in halls and bathrooms.
  • Install grab bars — especially in the shower and near the toilet.
  • Stay hydrated — dehydration causes dizziness.
  • Review medications — some increase dizziness or drowsiness.
  • Get vision checked — update glasses/contacts yearly.
  • Use assistive devices correctly — cane or walker should be fitted by a professional.
