Michael LaPelusa, MD

I care for adults across the full range of cancers and blood disorders, both malignant and benign.

I completed my hematology/oncology fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where I served as chief fellow for the oncology service at LBJ General Hospital. I completed internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and earned my medical degree from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine as a member of its inaugural graduating class.

I am an active medical writer and educator, with publications spanning clinical oncology and cancer care delivery. I recently relocated to the Kansas City area from Houston with my wife. 

Care Philosophy

A new cancer or blood disorder diagnosis is overwhelming, and my first job is to make it understandable. I want every patient to leave a visit knowing what we are treating, why I am recommending a particular approach, what to expect from it, and how to reach me. Treatment decisions are made together, and they account for what matters to the person in front of me. Patients and their families deserve unhurried answers and timely access. I work hard to make sure that getting excellent cancer care never requires leaving your community. 

Areas of Interest

General oncology and hematology; new-diagnosis and second-opinion consultations; survivorship and supportive care; coordinating local treatment for patients also being followed at academic cancer centers; medical education and writing. 

Clinical Interest

• Solid tumor oncology — including breast, gastrointestinal, lung and genitourinary malignancies 
• Hematologic malignancies
• Benign hematology, including anemias, cytopenias and thrombophilia and anticoagulation management
• Supportive and palliative oncology care
