Sometimes, newborns need close monitoring for a short time. If your newborn requires extra care, they’ll get it at our Level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Our specially trained staff care for babies born as early as 28 weeks or who have short-term health needs.

We partner with Children’s Mercy Hospital, which means neonatologists are on-call, and neonatal nurse practitioners are on-site 24/7 to care for your baby.

NICU Amenities

Our NICU rooms offer:

  • Access to lactation consultants
  • Breast pumps with a setting for premature babies
  • Fold-out sleeper chairs
  • Low lighting and decreased noise levels
  • Parent Care Unit (PCU) to help you learn how to care for your little one at home
  • Private rooms and twin rooms (pictured below)

Caregiver Support

When your baby is in the NICU, it can add stress for you and your loved ones. So, we offer extra support. Ask your nurse for information about support groups and to connect you with a member of our Spiritual Care team.

Visitor Policy

Mother and a support person, along with four designated visitors over the age of 16, are allowed to visit our NICU. Visitor restrictions may vary throughout the year as our team monitors health risks.

Visitor guidelines:

  • Visitors are welcome during the hospital’s visiting hours, from 7:30 a.m.-9 p.m.
  • All parents/banded persons and visitors must check in at the secretary’s desk on the 8th floor in order to gain access to the NICU. The mother and the second banded person are allowed in the NICU 24/7.
  • Children under 16 must be your baby’s sibling and must stay with an adult at all times.
  • Up to four people may be at your baby’s bedside at one time. This includes the mother and the person wearing the second identification band.
