Hearing the words, "You have cancer," can turn your world upside down. It's normal to feel shocked, scared, angry or overwhelmed. While there isn't a right way to respond, there are steps you can take to process your diagnosis and prepare for the road ahead with positivity and hope.

1. Get the facts straight

There is so much uncertainty after a cancer diagnosis. It can be tempting to start searching every detail online. Instead, make a list of questions and present them to your care team. Talk with them about your diagnosis, treatment options and what to expect next.

As new questions arise, consider writing them down before appointments and bringing a trusted friend or family member to help take notes. Remember, your care team treats people with your diagnosis every day. They are there to answer your questions, explain your options and help you feel informed and confident.

2. Lean on your loved ones, your care team

It's important to remember that you don't have to face cancer alone. Family and friends can be a tremendous source of strength, so don't hesitate to let them be there for you.

Your care team also does more than administer treatment. They are there to support you and care for you not only as a patient but as a person. Many people also find comfort in joining a cancer support group, where they can connect with others who understand the challenges, emotions and victories that come with a cancer diagnosis.

Accepting support from those around you can lighten your load, ease feelings of isolation and foster meaningful connection.

3. Take care of your body whenever you can

Cancer treatment can be physically and emotionally demanding. While some days will be harder than others, focusing on healthy habits can make a difference.

Aim to eat nourishing foods, stay as active as your care team recommends and prioritize rest. Even short walks, gentle stretching or maintaining a regular sleep schedule can help improve energy and support your overall well-being during treatment.

4. Prepare for changes before they happen

Depending on your diagnosis, treatment may bring changes to your appearance, daily routine or ability to work. Talking through these possibilities with your healthcare team ahead of time can help you feel more prepared.

Planning for transportation, work schedules, finances or help around the house before treatment begins can reduce stress later so you can focus on healing.

5. Prioritize what matters most

A cancer diagnosis often changes your perspective. Give yourself permission to slow down and spend more of your time and energy on the people, activities and priorities that matter most to you.

Some days will feel overwhelming, while others may feel surprisingly normal. Taking life one day at a time, celebrating small victories and most importantly, holding space for joy can help you find hope and strength throughout your journey.
