Key takeaways:

  • Reusable bottles can harbor germs. Moisture, leftover drinks and bacteria from your mouth can create a cozy environment for bacteria, yeast and mold.
  • Don’t forget the lid. Straws, seals and small grooves can trap moisture and residue, making them easy-to-miss germ hot spots.
  • Clean and dry daily. Wash your bottle, lid and removable parts with warm, soapy water, then let dry completely before reassembling.

Your YETI or other drinkware goes everywhere with you. The gym. Your desk. The car. Meetings. Maybe even your nightstand. Reusable water bottles and tumblers are convenient, durable and better for the environment than constantly reaching for single-use bottles. But there’s one thing they need regularly: a good cleaning.

A germy water bottle

Even when you're only filling your beverage container with water, bacteria from your mouth can make their way into the container every time you take a sip. Add in moisture, leftover liquid and warm temperatures, and your bottle can become a cozy little hangout for bacteria, yeast and mold.

And if you're using it for coffee, smoothies, protein drinks or other sugary beverages, that leftover residue is even more attractive to germs. It’s important to clean promptly and not let the residue sit.

The lid is the sneaky culprit

Think the container itself is the problem? Think again.

The lid, straw and rubber seals can be germ hotspots. Those tiny grooves and hard-to-reach spots are perfect places for moisture and residue to hide.

If they can be removed and taken apart, wash them thoroughly on a regular basis. A small brush can help tackle those tricky nooks and crannies.

After each day's use:

  • Wash your container with warm, soapy water.
  • Clean the lid, straw and removable pieces and rinse well.
  • Let all pieces dry completely before putting them back together.
  • If you notice an odor or see a buildup, it's time for a deeper clean. Follow the manufacturer's care instructions.

Bottoms up — but keep it clean

Your reusable tumbler is doing its job by helping you stay hydrated and cutting down on single-use containers. Return the favor by giving it a regular cleaning.
